Although it has not been official finalised yet the cities proposed for the Northern Powerhouse are: Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and Hull.
Fortunately for myself I am from Liverpool and have lived in Leeds for the past three years giving me a in-depth knowledge of two of the four cities which I felt would assist greatly during the course of the brief.
In order to gain a better understanding of what these cities had to offer to
the Northern Powerhouse researchI began looking into campaigns
previously launched by the individual cities and their tourism culture.
Liverpool
- City located in Merseyside
- Home of two premier league football clubs
- Two cathedrals, Catholic and Anglican
- Major port
- World famous Aintree racecourse
- Home of The Beatles
- Capital of Culture 2008
- Many museums including; World Musem, Museum of Liverpool, Maritime Museum
- Walker art gallery and Tate Liverpool
- China Town
- The Economy of Liverpool is one of the largest within the United Kingdom, sitting at the centre of one of the two core economies within the North West of England
- Royal Liver buildings
- One of the most recognisable skylines in Britain
- St Georges Hall
- Philharmonic Hall
- A 2011 TripAdvisor poll voted Liverpool as having the best nightlife of any UK city, ahead of Manchester, Leeds and even London
- Home to four major universities
Anfield football stadium
Albert Docks
World museum
Catholic Cathedral also known as 'Paddy's Wig Wam'
Everyman thearte
Radio City Tower
Liverpool was named European Capital of Culture in 2008 and therefore there was a significant tourism campaign with the tagline 'it's happening in Liverpool'. The collage aesthetic is an effective method of visually represents the diversity of the city of Liverpool.
A warm colour palette was used throughout giving a sense of continuity.
Leeds
Leeds Town Hall
Corn Exchange
Trinity Shopping Centre
As part of The Tour De France which began in Leeds in 2014, a campaign Tour De Yorkshire was released. I like how the designer has made reference to the famous yellow subtly within his branding, whilst using a blue to compliment which demonstrates this is a extension of Tour De France without just copying their branding - Colour could be a possible method of ties the four cities of Capital North together
Manchester
- Located in Greater Manchester
- Home to two premier league football clubs
- Trafford Centre
- Beetham Tower
- Piccadilly Station and gardens
- Home of Oasis
- Several museums including Lowry
- Gay Village
- Salford Keys
- Media City
Again a considered colour palette has been chose in order to give a sense of continuity to the campaign. I particularly like the aesthetic of the vector illustrations which give a modern graphic feel.
Hull
- Stands on the river hull
- Home of Hull City football club
- Will be 2017 UK City of Culture
- Vibrant city of arts and culture
- Several museums
- Hull New Theatre
- Large number of parks and green spaces
Hull City stadium
Similarly to the aesthetic of the campaign launched for Manchester, the vector illustrations used for this map of Hull is a lot more engaging and interactive than the use of photography etc.
