From all the different typestyle I experimented the initial stages of the brief I chose two to explore further to give a better idea how they could work as a composition for the front cover of the exhibition book.
By bleeding the type of the screen it creates a design which is much more impactful and some interesting pieces of negative space.
I think the title of exhibition would need to be a little clearer then as shown on this design especially as it will be the front cover of the book, the audience needs to be aware of what it's for.
Title makes much more of an impact when it bleeds of the edge of the book.
Although I like the colour combination I think Red and Black together has become quite cliche.
I believe this aesthetic for the title is much more appropriate as not only does it create an eye-catching cover which I believe would entice the audience to pick it up but similarly to the subject of the exhibition, Subliminal Messaging at first the word is not legible but upon looking again it clearly reads 'Hoax'.

In order to gain a greater contextual knowledge of what already exists in the field already I searched on the Tate Shop at the exhibition books they had on offer for existing exhibitions. This gave me a better idea of the restraints and considerations I would have to make when designing a publication such as the grid etc. I also personally found it beneficial in terms of how I could potentially communicate a interactive museum in a publication.
Several of the publications which I collected during the research process of this brief used a simple two column grid. The simplistic style incorporated in the 'Glam: The Performance of Style' publication was was something I too wanted to incorporate, I also felt that a simplistic 5 by 2 grid would give me scope to be creative within the design which is one of my sole aims of the original brief.
Once I had set a grid it was simply a task of inputting the content to fit the grid, thereby creating a aesthetically pleasing uniformity throughout the double page spreads of the book.
I don't believe having the two paragraphs of type in two columns is very readable in this design.
I think the scale of the title on this design is too overbearing, it could possibly take away from the paragraphs of type.
For the final double page spread I chose to lay the type over the title in one column, which after experimenting with two columns I personally felt was more readable which is an important factor to consider when producing editorial design. To aide the readability further I used two different type weights 'light' and 'regular' to separate the two different paragraphs.
When laying out the double page spreads for the art and design pieced which would be included in the proposed exhibition I was particularly inspired by Damian Hirst's exhibition book. The design is very minimalistic with one piece per page and succinct synopsis, thereby focussing the attention on the design which would be the purpose of the book.
This simple, minimalistic style contrasts well with some of the bolder experimental double page spreads which I have designed for the book.
One of the things that struck me when looking at existing exhibition books was the simplicity of their designs, although this is a style I admire and incorporate in my own work I would personally like to used my exhibition book as an opportunity to be as experimental as possible. Almost giving the audience a taste of how interactive the exhibition would be through the book.
