OUGD603: Extended Practice - Brief 7: Zoo Giftshop Branding Collateral

Once I had developed the logos for the three separate sectors of the zoo, each with there own identity and characteristics I was able to used this in order inform the the collateral which would be branded in a similar way.

As well as branding considered collateral which would be appropriate and not just branded for the sake of it I also wanted to reflect the individual characteristics of the characters I had developed with the languages and aesthetic I chose for the collateral as I believe this is a truly unique concept which would engage the target audience of children.

I began by making lists of prospective items to brand along with sketches of how it could possible work.

Although I will be producing collateral for a broad range of deliverable across different sectors of the zoo it is important that their is a consistency throughout all the deliverables which is something I considered when choosing stock etc.

This collateral for 'Market' works really well. Something as simple as using the red for side of the boxes and bags etc. is a subtly way of branding a range of collateral.

In order to produce a fully rounded set of branded collateral which suite the purpose of the corresponding sector it will be used for I would like to brand a range of sized bags and boxes for the zoo gift shop representing the range of gifts available.

I quite like the style of this box with the built in handle, this would be appropriate for a take-away sandwich packaging for the café.

Considering I propose to brand a large range of collateral an effective form of keeping costs down would be to produce a range sleeves and/or stickers which could easily be applied to a range of boxes bags etc.

Inspirations for packaging for the ice cream parlour

Although I did consider making my own nets in order to produce truly unique boxes etc. I felt it would be more realistic for the timescale of the brief.

Inspired by the Market branding, I chose to use brown stock for all the packaging which as well as complimenting the blue hue I hard used for the branding books whilst tying all the elements of the brief together.

One concern I did have was being able to match all the brown stocks with the different boxes and bags etc. in order to create a sense of continuity, however this is something which could be easily altered in Photoshop.

When printing the branding guidelines books for this brief I also printed a couple stickers which would be used to brand items such as boxes, cups etc. although aesthetically these did work I didn't feel like these tested or improved my crafting skills in any way and therefore I began exploring different channels for branding this material.

Packaging and crafting is something i've always struggled with over the past two years, and therefore I was aiming to vastly improve these skills during the course of the brief. One of the most difficult pieces of craft I will produce during the course of the brief will be the belly bands for coffee cups, milkshake cups and ice cream tubs as it is vital they are the right length in order to sit perfect round the cup with the tab securing it.

I began by sourcing a net from the internet which I could use as a template for my own mock-up testing to see whether it the cup I had bought.

Over all I am quite pleased with the craft of the final belly band. The tab secures the belly band neatly and professionally. Considering I cut out the belly band by hand using a scalpel I believed this has been done to a semi-professional standard, however this could still be improved in some areas.

Again tags which would theoretically be used within the gift shop, detailing prices and within the café for sandwich fillings, making these purposeful and not just branded for the sake of it which was my main consideration when choosing collateral to be branded.

These were hand-cut and hole punched so string could be fed through.

I also produced a mockup for a sleeve, using the dimensions of the box in to ensure the sleeve would fit comfortably on the box and could be taken on and off with ease.

The sleeve is a perfect fit for the box which I am very happy with, I was also able to use double-sided tape which fastens cleanly and looks professional on the final outcome. I made a conscious decision to make the design as simplistic as possible and therefore could be easily applied to a variety of sizes and designs.

When I initially got my collateral printed professional downstairs, it was printed using the laser printer as opposed to the inkjet which was later used two print the tags, sleeves and belly bands etc. which unfortunately means they are two different colours which I am not pleased about although I knew this was to be expected when during the print process, again this is something I could alter in photoshop.

Other than the difference in hue I am pleased with the crafting element of this brief however I would have like to have branded all the collateral I had originally proposed.
